How to get the best results
Start with 8 to 20 clues. That is enough for a full grid and small enough that every word usually fits. Keep answers to a single word or short phrase, and mix long and short ones, because words need shared letters to cross. If a word is skipped, switch the algorithm and it will often fit. Pick a template first if you want one, since it sets the layout for you, then use Auto position to tidy up and drag things by hand for the final touches. If the clues take up too much room, try Clue flow & spacing before making the text smaller. Turn Show answers off, then print or download the image to share.
What each control does
The buttons next to your puzzle, in the order you will see them.
Puzzle
- Algorithm: Chooses how the words are arranged in the grid. Each option lays out the same clues in a different way, so try a few and keep the one you like.
- Cell border thickness: Makes the lines around the grid squares thinner or thicker.
- Show answers: Fills in the answers so you can check the puzzle. Click it again to hide them. Turn it off before you print a puzzle for someone to solve.
Text & clues
- Clue & secret text size: Makes the clue text and the hidden message text smaller or bigger.
- Clue flow & spacing: Controls how much space the clues take up. Standard has the most room. Compact and Tight cut down the gaps between clues. Run-in is the smallest: the clues follow each other in one block of text instead of one per line.
- No text labels: Swaps the words Across, Down and Final Answer for small icons. Useful if your clues are in another language.
Page layout
- Auto position: Arranges the grid, clues and hidden message on the page for you, and makes the clue text smaller if that is the only way to fit everything. Your title and images stay where they are.
- Reset layout: Puts everything back to its starting position and size.
Decoration
- Add title: Adds a title box to the page. Type your title and drag it where you want it.
- Use template: Lets you pick a ready-made design with pictures, a title and a matching layout. You can still move and resize everything afterwards.
- Add image: Lets you upload your own pictures and place them on the page. Uploaded pictures are not saved with the puzzle, so print or download before you leave the page.
